Our Union & Our

Background

The Private Sector Workers Trade Union (PSWTU) was founded in 2013 against the backdrop of aspiring to improve the lives of workers in the most vulnerable sectors of our economy. Taking into cognisance that workers face similar struggles in the most sectors, PSWTU’s scope of organisation is wide to cater for similar but yet diverse workers needs in this mainstream economy.

Our objective is to advance and defend the interest of the workers in respect of all matters of mutual interest, unfair labour practises, and all forms of exploitation in order to improve the standard of living of workers.
From our inception, PSWTU has regarded itself as a progressive, transformative, empowering, and principled trade union with a sole purpose of prioritising workers needs and interest by making a substantial contribution to change both the working and living conditions of our members.

Our commitment is to provide quality service to our members including exerting influence on major policy issues in the sectors which we are organising. Our strength is in our ability to combine the experiences of long-standing union leaders who are united together to defend and empower workers in these vulnerable sectors.

Our

Aim

  • To defend and assist our members to resist unfair labour practises and dismissals
  • To render effective and quality service to our members.
  • To promote job security for union members and workers by advocating for job creation programmes and resisting dismissals for operational reasons.
  • To advance and defend the interest of workers in all matters of mutual interest between themselves and their employers
  • To promote and defend the socio-economic interests of union members, workers and the working class
  • To eradicate all forms of unfair discrimination in the workplace
  • To promote democracy and worker control in the union by encouraging members, shop stewards, officials and office bearers to work in an accountable and responsible manner.
  • Unite, inspire and educate our members.

Our Vision

Being the voice for the growing numbers of unorganised and marginalised workers in the country.

Our

DIFFERENTIATOR

Our resolve is not to fall into the bureaucratic practices that have seen many union leaders gradually distancing themselves from their members. As much as we concede that organising the low paid and the precarious is an ambitious task, we are determined to ensure that these workers find a home within PSWTU.

Workers are increasingly rejecting traditional trade unions and forming new types of organisations that bring workers together to promote their rights and interests. The future lies with unions that are forward looking and comprehend the plight of workers in this challenging economy. PSWTU sees this as an opportunity for a new kind of unionism that will take up the space and remain resilient and relentless in advocating workers’ rights and interest.
