CONTRACT CLEANING INDUSTRY

The cleaning sector is one of the industries associated with variety of work-related challenges ranging from working conditions, wages to career growth and regulations of the sector.

The majority of workers in this sector are employed under fixed-term commercial contracts. The sector as with the private security sector is growing strongly as entry into the industry is easy and start-ups are flooding the market.

The industry is susceptible to economic downturns as customers try to cut costs and negotiate lower rates. Employees in the cleaning sector also experience long working hours with few breaks similarly witnessed in other low paying jobs such as security guards.

As the Private Sector Workers Trade Union, we have launched our campaign to fight for better cleaner’s pay, better cleaning jobs and a better cleaning industry. This campaign has five key demands: more time to clean, better equipment and training; better salaries and job security; deal with quality cleaning companies; and respect and a voice at work.
